praying in the Spirit
while visiting my mom last week i got to sit down & share my journey into a Spirit-filled life with my friend paige on her podcast, "love in a cottage".
neither paige nor i have ever really spoken publicly about praying in tongues before; we realized this just before hitting "record"! our sincere desire is that this conversation could open up life in the Spirit for you, which starts with salvation & surrender, & leads to a life abundant, continually led by Him.
on the podcast i mentioned a few resources that were helpful for me on my own journey into a deeper, more intimate life with God.
blackaby, henry and richard. experiencing God. i first read this book as a college student in my twenties living at the HEART village, a school and demonstration farm in central florida, in preparation for life on the foreign mission field. a shiny-faced intern from arkansas shared it, opening up her own Spirit-led journey to me, & for the first time ever as a Christian i had some practical instruction on how God often speaks : through His Word, our circumstances/providence, nature, and our hearts.
edman, v. raymond (former president of wheaton college). they found the secret : twenty lives that reveal a touch of eternity. this is the book that started it all for me, and validated my innate longing for more in the Christian life, the “much more” of salvation—being saved through his life (romans 5:9-10). here you will discover, through some familiar & unfamilar names, the necessity of the indwelling presence of Jesus & the power of the Spirit to lead a satisfying and powerful Christian life.
pullinger, jackie. chasing the dragon. this is an autobiography, but i find it so foundational as an invitation and handbook for a life led by the Spirit, initiated by the filling of the Spirit. jackie shares her own experience of being filled with the Spirit and receiving the gift of tongues in a really disarming, very British sort of way :), and it first birthed a hunger in me for the gift of tongues, which the Lord eventually filled! once filled with the Spirit, her ministry is remarkably empowered, & she makes the sharing of the gospel, and setting the captives free, seem so alluring and even easy. the full gospel—the one that Paul says we are not to be ashamed of, is that the power of God leads to repentance and salvation, all who believe (romans 1:16). the gospel of power, when the Holy Ghost has come upon us, makes us effective witnesses to the transformative work of Jesus Christ, to the ends of the earth, and i think this book may be a source of great inspiration for all of you as it has been for me, paige, & my daughter heron!
sermon : JACKIE PULLINGER / i’d also recommend this three-part teaching on the Holy Spirit by jackie pullinger, available on sermonindex.net (also available on their app) : “be filled with the Holy Spirit” (parts 1, 2, and 3). in this talk she shares how she personally received the fullness of the Holy Spirit, which she calls, “the power to make Jesus known”. one cautionary note : in the first five minutes of the recording, there’s a message in tongues (with interpretation) and a prophecy that may seem strange if the gifts of the Spirit are unfamiliar to you (mostly, simply because the interpreter chooses to yell rather than speak the interpretation!). please, listen on, and don’t let it deter you from hearing this message, which i believe will be of extreme help and inspiration to you! a fuller explanation of jackie’s experience & ministry are available in her biography, Chasing the Dragon.
i didn’t mention this one on the podcast, though i mentioned derek prince. josh & i first dug into his teachings when we needed to learn about deliverance, & he’s since become one of our favorite Bible teachers. this past pentecost sunday josh started listening to his sermon series on the Holy Spirit. it’s a 10-part series, “the Holy Spirit in You”—if you feel like diving into the whole thing, but i think even parts 3 (“what happened at pentecost”) & 10 (“how to open up to the Holy Spirit”) will be extremely helpful for you in terms of a biblical basis for the filling of the Spirit, &, also, specifically tongues. each session is just 10-minutes long. they’re also available for easier listening on the app under “legacy radio archives”/Holy Spirit in You.
